Defying a strong anti-incumbency wave, the National Students'' Union of India (NSUI) have walked away with three out of four seats in the recently held Delhi University Students'' Union elections. Building on its past achievements, the current DUSU president Narinder Tokas promises to carry forward the good work initiated by the former president of DUSU Rohit Choudhury.
Tokas said: "During the past one year, we have successfully implemented pioneering schemes in DU which include life insurance scheme for the DU students, Rajiv Gandhi fellowship for poor and meritorious students, career mela for students and starting new U-specials. We will ensure that the DUSU continues its tradition of working for the welfare of student community in future too."
So, what are your plans for the next one year? "We will push for the introduction of more job-oriented and vocational courses, a uniform fee structure in all colleges, transparency in the admission procedure of SC and ST candidates and demanding more evening colleges," Tokas remarked.
Apart from these, DUSU under the leadership of Tokas plans to demand for the review of current internal assessment and examination system in DU too. "We will ask for the introduction of a grievance redressal mechanism for students in every college. We will ask the authorities that results of all exams should be declared before the start of the new academic session and revaluation should be time-bound too," Tokas pointed out.
On sports front too, there would be several initiatives that would be addressed by the DUSU. "We are planning to ask DU authorities to begin construction of a swimming pool at the sports'' complex and construction of badminton and basketball courts at the North campus. We will ensure that refreshment money given to all sportsperson should be a minimum Rs 20 in all the colleges."
Is it true that money than anything else played an important role in ensuring the victory of the NSUI''s candidates? "This is a baseless allegation from a bunch of losers who have failed to win the confidence of the student community, who have reposed faith in us, as they have seen our work during the past one year. In future too, our aim will be to continue doing the good work in the interest of students at DU who come from different parts of the country. And, we will try our best to fulfil all the promises made in this year''s manifesto," Tokas remarked.
